![]() As… polarizing as they might be, Instagram brows are definitely a feature of mid-2010s beauty. The 2010s had several distinct beauty trends you can point to even if you weren't a fan of them. What's the 2022 twist on "no-makeup makeup"? What are the signature, unique elements? ![]() That's fine and all, but part of me also thinks that we aren't being as imaginative as we could with that kind of aesthetic. As a result, people are wearing less makeup than before - according to a survey conducted by the NPD Group in 2020, 71 percent of women shared that they were using fewer cosmetics - and embracing a more natural look. People were asked to isolate so as not to spread the virus (spoiler: we were unsuccessful in that), and, at the time I'm writing this, face mask mandates are still in place in many states. The COVID-19 pandemic completely changed everything. If the trends aren't referential, they are painfully bland - at least, to me. The classic mod eye makeup of the '60s was simply a precursor for the smoked-out, neutral cut creases of the '90s. But even though previous decades were still subject to this same rule, they still had their own distinctive styles that we can easily identify today. For example, we're in the 2020s now, so Y2K aesthetics (meaning trends from the late '90s to early 2000s) are back in a major way. It usually happens in an approximately 20-year cycle. There has always been some element of nostalgia that influences the trends of each decade. It's a recurring theme in industries outside of beauty and fashion, too - just look to the several (I'll say it: too many) reboots of TV shows and movies. Nostalgia has been a dominating force in our culture since time immemorial. It makes me wonder what the defining "look" of the 2020s is going to be - and how it will (or won't) differ from what's been offered up in the past. I'm almost overwhelmed by the strong sense of nostalgia that is defining the beauty trends we see today.
